Smart Mobility & Enforcement: Designing a WIM System for ANAS in Valtellina
By Davide Botto
As a senior technology consultant, I led the design of an advanced weigh-in-motion (WIM) system based on Kistler technology, to be deployed on new road infrastructure managed by ANAS in the Valtellina valley.
The system enables continuous, non-intrusive monitoring of vehicle loads in transit, associating each vehicle's weight with its number plate in real time. Integration with high-precision sensors and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) lays the foundation for future direct enforcement, ensuring compliance with road safety regulations and protecting public assets from overloaded vehicles.
Beyond enforcement, the platform supports intelligent traffic analysis, infrastructure preservation and data-driven decision-making for road network management.
